FIRST RECORD YOU BOUGHT?
"Creedence Clearwater Revival's 'Cosmo's Factory', 1972. It cost $3.30 and every year on the local TV station there would be a special about them, which is how I first heard them. They were a revelation to me, they were so cool."
LAST RECORD YOU BOUGHT?
"I had to replace my copy of the James Brown box set 'Startime', because the old one was worn out since I listened to it every night on the Ozzy tour. And I bought the first Dub War album, which is fucking great. Your Editor Phil turned me on to them and they're amazing,right up there with Bad Brains."
RECORD YOU WISH YOU'D PLAYED ON?
"I'm not like that. I'm a more concrete person, but there are so many amazing albums I love. 'Physical Graffiti' by Led Zeppelin. 'Volume 4' by Black Sabbath, which is masterful. The first Killing Joke record, 'in The Flat Field' by Bauhaus, which is phenomenal - all genius records. And Kyuss' 'Sky Valley' is a total classic; those guys were a great 90s rock band."
RECORD YOU PUT ON BEFORE YOU GO ONSTAGE?
"Some James Brown, just to catch that swagger and get pumped up. And to wind down I'd prahabty listen lo some '50s big band swing or some cool '50s of Faith No More and '60s soundtracks - Henry Mancini or stuff like that."
RECORD YOU'D RECOMMEND TO A KERRANG! READER?
"That's a tough one. but I'd say a Louis Armstrong record - because it if wasn't for Louis Armstrong there wouldn't be Jimi Hendrix. Louis Armstrong is the father of everything, because he took music from the whorehouses and from the slave quarters, and brought It into concert halls and onto records.
"If you had a guitar player who played like him. it'd have to be Hendrix. because he broke every rule and invented everything. There's a tour set CD called 'Portrait Of The Artist As A Young Man' which is incredible totally serious, man."
FAVOURITE RECORD SHOP?
"There's a few. Honest Johns in Portobello is really cool. and there's a tremendous record store in Japan called Wave.
"And there's a store in Berkeley. California called Amoeba, which is one of the beslrecord stores there is. Mike Patton and I love record shopping. I hope I never stop getting excited about music."
FAVOURITE RECORD SLEEVE?
"I just got a set of Sabbath remasters and I'm partial to the covers on some of those. And Echo And The Bunnymen's 'Heaven Up Here' is pretty bitching to look at, but I'm not a very visual person.
"I remember buying Aerosmith's 'Toys In The Attic' or 'Get Your Wings' because the cover was cool. though."
RECORD THAT CHANGED YOUR LIFE?
"I know this is cheating a little, but I'll tell you something I saw which really changed my life. I was staying with my grandparents in April '74 when I was a kid, and t saw a in-concert TV special featuring Black Sabbath. Honestly, no bullshit!
"I saw Bill Ward, this long-haired manic freak in tights playing 'War Pigs', and that was it for me. It was pure power and energy, and I knew music was going to be real central to
me from then on.
"I'm still looking lor the video of that show. because it was spectacular, so it anyone has one..."
